Break it down into its simplest components. Each time you practice, choose one of those projects and give it your full attention. To become a martial arts master, or a master of anything, you must approach your training as a series of small projects. ![]() You must become the greatest teacher you know. You must actively pursue knowledge and experience. To become a martial arts master, you must take responsibility for your own learning. That’s not the path to mastery… that’s the path to nowhere. If you have no answer, or just a general answer, that means you’re only going to learn if something happens to catch your attention or if someone brings something to your attention. If you can’t tell me what you’re working on, you are failing yourself as a teacher. If I stopped you on the way to your next practice session, could you tell me what you’re planning to work on? Know this. How about you? Are you a great student? Do you possess the Master Mindset? They’re diligent about assigning themselves tasks. They’re honest with themselves about their strengths and weaknesses. They pay attention to what they’re doing. They don’t float through class or stand around with a belief that showing up is enough to make them better. They don’t wait for a teacher to tell them to fix something. Great students set specific goals in their training. A student will say, “I’m trying a new set up for my reverse punch.” Or, “I’m fixing my rear foot when I turn in this kata.” Once in a while, however, I get an answer that makes me happy. They’ll say, “I’m working on sparring,” or “Kata,” or “Side kicks.” In some cases, the students will give me an answer. Maybe they’re learning, maybe they’re not. This means that even though students may be working hard, they’re just going through the motions. Simple, right? And yet, in most cases, I get no answer. The way they answer tells me immediately who is on the path to becoming a martial arts master and who is not. Let me share it with you…ĭuring class, I always ask my students a question. They’ll never become a martial arts master. Students who approach class as a fun night out or just an exercise class are missing out on everything that makes the martial arts special. Most students just show up and work out and hope it will pay off someday. Most students have no idea how to guide their own practice. No one can make you work harder than you.īut there’s a problem-a BIG PROBLEM. No one will ever observe you more closely than you. Great teachers will let you know what you need to pay attention to and what to ignore.īut what if you’re not so lucky? What if you’ve never found a truly great teacher? Or what if you found a great teacher then lost him or her? Who can you trust to continue learning and growing? You. If you’re lucky, you’ll have great teachers who will put you on track and keep you on track to becoming the best you can be. But it takes more than consistent practice to become a martial arts master-you also need guidance. And Sasuke, if he thinks it would aid him defeat Itachi, isn't going to mind.You show up to class. my general feeling on the matter is that Oro is Sasuke's sensei when it comes to fighting, but Kabuto is doing whatever he can to tie strings onto the guy. And small steps, when there are enough of them, aren't so small anymore. He'd take any small step possible to mould Sasuke into something that fits better into these plans. He's got his own plans -whatever they may be- to worry about. by all appearances, he's a control freak. I can't believe that he would suddenly complete ignore Kabuto, when the latter's clearly got abilities that may come in handy, or at the very least is able to stay alive and maintain his position as Oro's second.Īs for Kabuto. Sasuke wants to learn anything that can help him defeat Itachi. at the same time I have a hunch that Kabuto may be teaching him other things. Sasuke would be gone in a second if he wasn't. Who's training him or from whom is he learning? Two different questions.
